How to run a charity death counter with money per death

“I donate a dollar every time I die” is one of the best charity-stream bits there is, because every death suddenly matters to chat. The overlay should say what it costs, not just how many. In Kloot a counter can show its count as money: set the amount per count and the symbol, and 47 deaths reads $47 on stream. It is a display you set the rate for — Kloot does not handle or read any donations — and an optional donation link sits in your panel so it is one tap away when chat asks.

How do you show a dollar-per-death counter on stream?

In Kloot (Pro), open your Deaths counter, go to Stakes → Money per count and turn on Show as money. Set Per count to 1, the symbol to $, and Symbol goes to Before. Each +1 now adds a dollar on stream: 47 deaths reads $47. It is a display only; Kloot never reads donations.

What you’ll build

A death counter that shows the running total in money — $1 per death, $47 on stream — bumped with the same keys.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Open the counter’s Stakes section

Open your Deaths counter (or make one from the Deaths template) in the Counters tool and scroll to Stakes → Money per count.

  2. 2

Set the rate and the symbol

Turn on Show as money. Per count is what one press is worth, from 0.01 up — 1 for a dollar a death, 0.5 for fifty cents. Set the Symbol ($, €, £, or a word) and whether it goes Before or After the number.

Tally marks, icons and rolling odometer digits switch to plain digits while money is on, so the amount always reads cleanly.

  3. 3

Add a goal if you have a target

Set a goal under Goal and it uses the same format after the slash — “$47 / $100” — with the usual pulse or confetti when you reach it.

  4. 4

Keep your donation link in the panel

Paste your fundraiser page into Donation link (optional). It shows next to the counter in your panel, on desktop and phone, so you can copy it into chat in a tap. It is never shown on stream, and Kloot does not read anything from it.

Want the link on screen too? Put it in a ticker line — that is what the ticker is for.

  5. 5

Run it with the same keys

Press +1 on every death from your deck, phone, or a mod’s co-pilot link. The amount climbs on stream with each press, and Reset takes it back to the starting value at the end of the bit.

How a counter runs, live

Once it’s built, running a counter is four keys — show it, bump it, correct it, reset it. Here’s the whole loop, and what each side sees.

  1. You put it up· step 1

    Toggle the counter on-screen

Tap the Show/Hide key when the session starts. The counter fades into its corner at the starting value — label above, number below, styled the way you built it.

    You: Press Show/Hide
    Overlay: Fades into its corner
Viewers: Sees the score is being kept
  2. You bump it· step 2

Press +1 the moment it happens

A kill lands, a win banks, chat loses a bet — you press +1 and the number pulses with a flash of color. You are the source of truth, so it works in every game ever made and never breaks on a patch.

You: Press +1 as the kill lands
    Overlay: Number pulses + flashes
    Viewers: Catches the moment land
  3. You correct it· step 3

    Fix a miscount instantly

Double-tapped, or counted one that didn’t count? Press −1 and it steps back with a red flash. No menus, no editing mid-game — the correction is one key, same as the bump.

    You: Press −1
    Overlay: Steps back, red flash
    Viewers: Sees an honest scoreboard
  4. You reset· step 4

    Reset for the next game

Match over — press Reset and the counter snaps back to its starting value for the next round. Leave it on screen between games or toggle it off; the counter keeps its style and corner for next stream.

    You: Press Reset between matches
Overlay: Snaps back to the start
    Viewers: Fresh score, new game

What streamers count

Anything with a number worth watching climb. The counters that earn their corner:

Kills & wins per session

When: Shooters, battle royales, ranked grinds — any stream where tonight has a score.

Why it works: A running kill or win count gives the whole session a scoreboard. Viewers who join at hour three instantly know how it’s going.

The deaths counter

When: Souls-likes, roguelikes, rage games — anywhere chat is counting your failures anyway.

Why it works: It’s the chat-favorite running joke: every death bumps the number, and the number becomes the story of the stream. Own the bit before chat does.

Challenge streams

When: Push-ups per death, jump-scare tallies, “every time I say the word” counters.

Why it works: The challenge only works if the count is public and live. One key per event keeps it honest — and the climbing number is the content.

Subathon & goal tracking

When: Sub goals, donation milestones, “100 wins this month” arcs.

Why it works: Set a goal and the counter shows “86 / 100” with a celebration when it crosses the line — so the whole room is watching the same finish line.

Deaths — the running joke

Red accent, flash animation — the number chat came to watch climb.

MaraPlays keeps a “Deaths” counter through every Souls run. Chat spams the skull each time it flashes, and the final number is the stream title tomorrow.

Challenge — the big number

Number size up to 120px, label below — readable from a phone stream at arm’s length.

“Push-ups” at 72px for a fitness-forfeit stream: Kai taps +1 as each rep lands, and the huge number is legible even on the IRL cam.

Goal — the finish line

Set a target and the counter shows “value / goal” — with a celebration when it crosses.

A subathon with “New subs 96 / 100” on screen: Tasha bumps it as subs land, and the confetti burst fires itself the moment the count reaches the goal.

Celebration fires on the goal — no extra key

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ✕Telling chat the counter follows donations. It shows deaths times your rate — say so on stream so nobody waits for their gift to appear.
  • ✕Leaving a tally or odometer number style on and expecting it on stream — money always shows plain digits.
  • ✕Forgetting Reset after the charity segment, so the next game starts at last night’s total.

Frequently asked

Does the counter update from real donations?

No. The amount is your count times the rate you set. Kloot has no connection to any donation service and never reads donations, so the number on stream is exactly the deaths you pressed.

Who pays the money?

Whoever the bit says pays — usually you, to your chosen charity, at the end of stream. Kloot never takes, holds or sends money.

Can viewers see the donation link?

Only if you share it. The donation link field is shown in your panel, never on the overlay.

Which plan is this on?
